Facilities
Laboratories
We have well equipped laboratories for conducting experiments in Molecular Biology, Tissue culture, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Histology, and Histochemistry. In addition, we have two labs for conducting conventional anatomical studies. A number of our MSc Biotechnology students do their MSc projects in our laboratories.

The Research Wing
Our MSc Biotechnology students have been utilizing the facilities of our laboratories to do their MSc Projects in Biotechnology (e.g., Transformation, Transgenics, DNA fingerprinting), Microbiology (e.g., isolation and characterization of microbes), and Biochemistry (e.g., Analyses) from 2002 when the Biotechnology programme was started. During 2006- 2007 we did a project funded by the UBCHEA on the use of DNA fingerprinting as a molecular tool for the early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. During the year 2014-2015 the department obtained a UBCHEA funded project on “The Regenerator Organ and Their Rechargers”.
From July 27th t0 August 7th 2017 the department Biotechnology conducted a 10 days Training and Workshop (BTW) program- by the Kerala Biotechnology Commission of KSCSTE.
We extend our lab facilities to outside students (+2, Degree & PG levels) by encouraging them to undertake project works in the fields of; Molecular Biology, Genetic Engineering, Plant Tissue Culture, Microbiology & Biochemistry.
Library
The Department has a small library of around 700 books. Many of the books are foreign editions authored by well-known international authors, and hence very expensive for students to buy personally. In order to facilitate their use by our students, we photocopy them (2 or 3 copies) and have them spiral-bound. The originals are kept in the library for reference in the Department. The student can, however, take the spiral-bound copes home or to their hostels for reading. This is one area which we want to make more extensive by acquiring several more International Text Books and Manuals for the use of students and faculty.
The books are categorized under the following headings
- BIOTECHNOLOGY
- BIOCHEMISTRY
- MICROBIOLOGY
- MOLECULAR BIOLOGY
- GENETICS
- ENVIRONMENTAL BIOLOGY
- IMMUNOLOGY
