About Us

Biotechnology Division of Union Christian College was established in the year 1995 under the Department of Zoology. It offers an Under Graduate and a Post Graduate Program namely B.Sc. Biological Techniques and Specimen Preparation (BT & SP) and M.Sc. Biotechnology of Mahatma Gandhi University Kottayam. B.Sc Biological Techniques and Specimen Preparation (BT&SP) started in 1995 as a vocational course formulated by the UGC to prepare University graduates for self-employment, considering the limited absorptive capacity of the public sector. B.Sc. Biological Techniques and Specimen Preparation (BT & SP) offers a two core course programme with two complementary papers under choice based course credit and semester system. From the year of 2002, B.Sc BT&SP is being offered as a self-financing course by the College Management. In addition to the regular classroom and laboratory sessions we provide our students to undergo on the Job training at centres associated with medical fields and plant tissue culture industry.

MSc. BIOTECHNOLOGY – M.Sc Biotechnology Program of the Union Christian College was started in 2002. Affiliated to the Mahatma Gandhi University, it is a self financing Course conducted as per the directives of the government and University.
MSc Biotechnology offers an excellent learning program with a distinguished faculty, high quality laboratories and state-of-the-art equipment- Primostar Carl Zeiss Microscope,PCR thermocycler, Transilluminator, Spectrophotometer, Refrigerated Centrifuge, Horizontal and Vertical Electrophoretic Units, Southern, Northern and Western blot facilities, Gel documentation system,in addition to a superb section for Histology and Histochemical studies.

The Biotechnology Division was later separated from the Department of Zoology in December 2015 as a single entity and renamed as Department of Biotechnology.

Mission Statement

The foremost emphasis of the Department is “to empower and equip our students with the recent academic developments in the field of modern biology”.
“To facilitate students to function as component professionals which will enable them to set up their own enterprises, as well as pursue advanced studies in several frontier areas of biology”.

BT&SP program emphasizes the development of capabilities which will enable the students to set up their own enterprises, as well as pursue advanced studies in several frontier areas of Biology, such as DNA Technology, Microbiology, and Tissue culture, Forensic medicine and Management studies.

Our Pride

We are inspired by the exemplary standards set by eminent pedagogues like Prof.P.Jacob Kurien (retired as HOD, Zoology and Founder Coordinator of Biotechnology Division), Dr.T.Thomas Philip, (former HOD of Zoology, Coordinator of Biotechnology Division and Principal of U.C.College) with PhD in Immunoparasitology, PDF in Molecular Parasitology, Univeristy of Guelph,Canada, PDF in Stress Physiology,University of British Columbia, Canada stands tall as a guiding force in the development and evolution of the division as one of the best among the affiliated colleges of the university and the state of Kerala.We were also fortunate enough to have the Cordinatorship of Dr. Shirley Thomas during the period 2014-2015, now serving as Head of the Department of Zoology.

We are also blessed with the valuable supports and services of Dr.K.K.Bhaskaran, (retired Prof. Christ College Irinjalakkuda), Prof.V.C.Mathew (retired Prof, Dept. of Chemistry, U.C. College Aluva ), Prof.C.M.Mathew (retired Prof. Dept. of Botany, U.C. College Aluva).
